He was not very secure at all. He did have a harnis, but it if he fell off, he would have been dunked. He would have had to hope the safety line held while he was being pulled out of the water.
Granted, yes, he wasn't balancing on a tree branch to get out there, but the fact of the matter is, he(and his crew) saved a life, and it wasn't their job or in their interest. It was a selfless act that should be commended.
